Unveiling of the IEEE Milestone Plaque commemorating 50 years of the Quartz Wrist Watch development

On Thursday Feb.22, 2018 at 4 pm in Neuchatel, Rue A.L.Breguet 2, the official ceremony of unveiling the French translated bronze plaque for IEEE Milestone #45 of September 2002 started with a conference in the Auditorium of the building, where CEH - Centre Electronique Horloger SA was born In January 1962. The talks were opened by Dr.Maria-Alexandra Paun, Chair of Switzerland Section and by State Councillor Jean-Nathaniel Karakash, in charge of Economy and Social Issues for the Canton Neuchatel and also an Alumnus of EPFL.

The unveiling by quite cold weather took place at 5 pm in front of the main entrance, enacted by Rene LeCoultre, past Chair of CEH and seconded by Dr Eric Vittoz, IEEE Fellow, while the other 4 speakers looked on from the basement of the stairs leading to the entrance. A standing aperitif was offered by IEEE afterwards to the near 60 participants of the ceremony, held in French. This event mirrored the official ceremony held close to 50 years ago, on Feb. 14, 1968 in the Neuchatel Parliament, when State Councillor Fritz Bourquin released the astonishing results of the Chronometric Contest at Neuchatel Observatory, whereby the electronic quartz wristwatches submitted by CEH broke all accuracy records and beat also the simultaneously  submitted wristwatches by challenger Seiko.

The presence of dedicated silicon bipolar integrated circuits, manufactured at CEH, in their wristwatches made the difference as opposed to Seiko, who lacking wafer fab capabilities, used silicon transistors assembled on hybrid circuitry for the electronic system.
